How ECOWISE™ Is Accelerating Sustainable Innovation

Introducing ECOWISE™: Our compass to a more Sustainable product portfolio

Sustainability requires discipline, transparency, and a consistent methodology. That is why we developed ECOWISE™, our Portfolio Sustainability Assessment (PSA) framework. Built on the respected PSA principles of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), ECOWISE™ applies a rigorous, fact‑based, stage‑gate process to ensure that every product carrying the ECOWISE™ label meets stringent sustainability criteria across our five priority pillars:

  1. Circular Economy
  2. Renewable Sourcing
  3. Energy Efficiency
  4. Safer Materials
  5. VOC Emissions Reduction

ECOWISE™ is our trusted sustainability quality label, ensuring clarity and accountability across our entire product portfolio.

A Major Milestone and a Strong Path Forward

By the end of 2025, 40.2% of our sales came from ECOWISE™‑ qualified products, clearly showing that our customers are increasingly choosing solutions with stronger sustainability benefits.

This milestone is more than a metric—it validates our strategic direction and showcases the commitment of our teams across all regions and technologies. It also gives us strong momentum as we advance toward our 2030 target of 50%.

ECOWISE™ in Action: Progress Across Our Five Pillars

5-pillars-allnex

1. Circular Economy

We are embedding circularity into product design and raw material selection:

  • Resins with recycled content up to 45%, including CRYLCOAT® OCEAN 2489‑5 and SETAQUA®8800 series
  • Transforming waste streams—such as discarded plastic bottles from landfills and oceans – into valuable raw material inputs

2. Renewable Sourcing

By integrating bio-based and mass-balanced alternatives, we are reducing dependence on fossil resources:

  • Acrylics, alkyds, and PUDs like SETAQUA® and RESYDROL® with high bio-content
  • A broad range of ISCC PLUS certified mass-balanced solutions across all regions
  • Expanding bio-based offerings in ADDITOL®, BECKOPOX®, DAOTAN®, DUROXYN®, and more
  • Multiple bio-based technologies fully compliant with IKEA Better Carbon requirements

3. Energy Efficiency

We are enabling reduced energy consumption during curing through innovations such as:

  • Low‑bake CRYLCOAT® powders, curing at just 140°C
  • Fast‑cure polyols (SETALUX® FC, DUROFTAL® FC, CYMEL®) and ACURE™ systems
  • High‑efficiency UV/EB curing with EBECRYL® resins

3. Safer Materials

We continue to eliminate substances of concern and promote safer formulations:

  • BPA‑NI polyesters and phenolics (DUROFTAL®, PHENODUR®) for safer packaging
  • Isocyanate‑free 2K systems (SETALUX®, ACURE™) for industrial metal and refinish
  • Tin‑free and formaldehyde‑free alternatives across key lines

4. Reduced Air Emissions

Leading the shift to low-VOC and VOC‑free technologies:

  • Advanced waterborne systems (SETAQUA®, ACURE™ AQ) meeting stringent eco‑label criteria
  • High solids, solvent-free solutions such as powder (CRYLCOAT®) and radiation cure (EBECRYL®) technologies that significantly cut VOC emissions
